Day 1 lesson- Blogs




For those of you who need a review of what we covered on Monday (or you were absent!) – here it is, step by step. Please refer to this post if you have questions about creating your blog.

  1. Housekeeping: parent permission, emergency cards, email addresses
  2. Introduction of Blogs. Go to PE 4 Fun, Mr. Martin’s Class, and ~Gecco~squad blogs
    • ~Students write their email address as a comment to first day’s post.
  3. Discuss Web page/blog possibilities. Brainstorm ideas.
    • ~ Decide on “user name” aka URL address ” “.learnerblogs.org. No caps or spaces in the username and it CANNOT be changed later. Think of creative license plate names using numbers with letters.
    • ~ Decide on the title of the blog (should have something to do with the topic and can be typed as you want to see it on the blog)
  4. Go to Learnerblog.org
    • ~ create the new blog and use lmuhlhauser@mvusd.org as the email address for passwords to be emailed to.
    • ~ print each student’s password out as they come in, then delete from email.
  5. Once students have blogs- together as a class go to admin page.
    • ~ Options; Discussion; Comments; uncheck box- “email me whenever anyone posts a comment” – click update options (like saving them)
    • ~ Options; Subscribe to comments; change the email address to your own- click update options.
    • ~ Users; profile; look at all the sections and change the email address; display name publicly as; biography (optional)- check with parents on what you should write here. Remember the Internet Safety Rules! Click update options.
  6. View “Posting” tutorial.
    • ~ pause throughout and try it on your own blog as the video goes along
    • ~ note sidebar options: publish, draft, private.
  7. View “Presentation” tutorial
    • ~ Choose theblog style noting how the sidebar is organized and if the theme (header) can be modified.
    • ~ Does the sidebar allow for separate pages to be viewed? Does it separate the categories of comments?
    • ~ It can be changed at anytime!
  8. Photos and document attachments.
    • ~ At the bottom of the post, click browse. Locate a photo or document in the file of your choice on the computer
    • ~ Upload the photo or document. This will save the item in the cyber-space server so that your blog will be able to find the photo and display it on your blog.
    • ~ The photo will show up in the box. You must click and drag it into your post for it to be there.
    • ~ You can position the photo anywhere on your post using the position markers above. Click on the picture and try it. Save your work often!
  9. When finished with the above options, publish your post!
  10. To get back to your admin page, locate the admin link on the sidebar. You can edit or delete any post from the admin page at any time.
  11. Suggestion: Have 2 browser window open to view your post as you edit it without going out of the admin page. You must refresh the browser to see the pages!
